Securing Our Future
The Wesley Foundation of Kalamazoo has a rich history of forming faithful leaders, creating an inclusive Christian community, and nurturing social justice and spiritual growth among college students. In the early 1920s, the Student Friendly Group began at Kalamazoo First UMC to offer college students a space to gather and grow in faith together. In 1926, that group became the Wesley Foundation of Kalamazoo. Since then, our ministry has been sustained by the generosity of individuals, churches, and donors who continue to believe in the mission of the church:
To form disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections (New UMC Vision Statement, May 2025).
Now we step into a new season, Securing Our Future, a campaign building on the success and lessons of our previous building campaign, which gave us a new home for ministry. Today, our goal is to secure the financial stability of that home by paying off our remaining mortgage and strengthening the financial foundation that allows us to serve students for generations to come.

Wesley Intentional Living Community
1960s Ministry Center
Our building was the foundation. Now, we’re securing the future.
When we built our new residence and ministry center, we did so because we believed that a permanent, visible, and welcoming home for campus ministry would be essential for decades to come. That building project was guided by the same spirit of vision and renewal that began when the Wesley Foundation first moved onto WMU’s campus in the 1960s.
Then, as now, faithful donors recognized that Wesley was not just a building but, instead, a community of students transformed by grace.
Our ministry continues to thrive in the heart of a secular and often isolating campus culture. Wesley remains one of the few truly inclusive, student-led Christian communities on WMU’s campus. Students gather weekly for meals, small groups, and leadership development opportunities. They pray, question, and grow together.
Through Wesley, students are:
Finding belonging in a community that welcomes them as they are
Growing in faith through fellowship, small groups, and service trips
Developing as leaders who now serve in local churches and global ministries
Yet the financial weight of our mortgage limits the resources we can devote directly to student engagement, spiritual formation, and service.
Paying off this debt will release new energy, new freedom, and new possibilities for ministry.
Join Us
We are inviting alumni, friends, and churches to give at a level that reflects their belief in and gratitude for this ministry. Every gift, whether it helps retire the mortgage or sustains us month-to-month, secures a future in which students will continue to encounter Christ’s love, ask bold questions, and grow as leaders for the church and the world.
Community in Action
Earlier this past semester, Cam arrived at Wesley carrying nothing more than curiosity and a yoga mat. One of our student staff members had invited them to Yoga at Wesley—a simple, student-to-student nudge of welcome and wanting to get to know them better. Cam later shared that when they first walked through Wesley’s doors, they hesitated. What is this place? Who are these people? Did I come to the right spot? Everything was new. They were simply looking for a place to breathe, stretch, and do some yoga. And we were simply glad they showed up.
A few weeks passed before Cam felt comfortable returning, not because anything was wrong, but because trust takes time. Eventually, the community felt safe enough to try again for Sunday Night Dinners. That moment sparked something forward-moving: Cam invited a friend. Soon after, they were helping decorate for Christmas, no longer questioning where they had come, but investing in where they belonged.
On Christmas decorating night at Wesley, they met Jonah, a new to campus student navigating life at Western Michigan University. Two students whose paths would have never otherwise crossed spent the night laughing while stringing lights and fluffing garland. The joy continued at the table with card games, shared stories, and community forming in real time.
This was more than an event. It was students connecting and friendships forming because the space exists. A safe, secure home base that gives students confidence to live into our vision of being an authentic, transforming, Christ-centered community. God is at work here in Kalamazoo. And this is only the beginning!
Together, we can ensure that the Wesley Foundation continues to be a light for students at WMU and beyond—today, tomorrow, and for the next century.
